Mad Scientist #4 – Learning
MrM: What did you learn in school today?
Ro: <long pause> I learned, that it is possible, that you don’t learn anything in school for a whole day.
Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) – Intermittent Fasting (IF)
Some recently published research out of University of Southern California shows some promising results for a diet that mimicks fasting for one week once a month. The diet asks for 1200 calories for the first fasting day and only 750 calories for the following 4 days.
Day one of the diet comprises:
- 10 per cent protein, 56 per cent fat and 34 per cent carbohydrate, making 1,090 calories
Days two to five:
- Nine per cent protein, 44 per cent fat and 47 per cent carbohydrate making 725 calories
The diet is observed to jump-start the immune system and thereby generating a plaethora of positive health effects ranging from lower cholesterol and better cancer prevention/recovery.
I’m always interested in strategies that emulate the eating behaviors our ancesters were exposed to and our bodies adapted to over thousands of years. This appears to be a promising one – more research needed…

Layered error correction
The other day I was cooking at home, when I ran out of flour while making a sauce. So I got my cell phone out and added it to our electronic groceries shopping list while attending to my meal on the stove. MrsM stopped by the local store on her way back from work and showed up a little later with a big smile on her face: “These are for you! – I figured one wasn’t enough….”. I was staring at a bunch of flowers – I never get flowers. – Ever.
What happened?
Autocorrect on my phone had corrected my request for ‘flor’ to ‘flower’ and my generous wife had thought that a single one wasn’t enough for me, so she made it ‘flowers’. Meanwhile the sauce had been modified to become cream based…
But nevertheless I got my first bunch of flowers ever – and we all had a good laugh when we figured out what had happened. Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you get.
Renting in the age of the Internet
The internet has enabled multiple shared ownership models and it is becoming easier by the day to rent equipment or real-estate that was previously only commercially available.
Think Hotels while traveling: You used to have to find a good deal for a hotel through a travel agent, but today, thanks to AirBnB and the likes you can rent from the convenience of your phone from any personal party who’s listed their house/cabin/appartment/studio.
Same for rental cars. It used to be mandatory to get a Hertz/Avis rental car. But today, you can either switch to car sharing using Uber/Lift or use one of the services that rents you cars from private parties (https://turo.com/).
It’s amazing! That way you can try out exotic cars for a day or two while getting around for business or pleasure. Sweet!
